On Seeing (2014-Present)

On Seeing is a series of visual meditations captured without a lens on the camera. Its focus is on the act of seeing, and the awareness it brings.

Artist Statement: On Seeing

On Seeing is the result of a visual meditation practice I keep. I make the images with no lens on the camera, using various vintage lenses and optical devices held in front of the sensor. The practice allows me to alter the usual parallel relationship between the lens and media planes, and forces a very close proximity to the botanical subjects. The scene in the camera’s viewfinder contains extremely shallow focus, and swiftly changes as flares of light pour into the scene. Making these images fixes my attention on the act of seeing, heightens my awareness of light and time, and grounds my gratitude in the gifts awareness of these things brings.
