Aspen Studies

ARTIST STATEMENT

These images are inspired by the bright yellow color of new aspen leaves in early spring. Anyone who has lived among aspen groves knows this singular color displayed in early June when they first leaf. The color itself is indicative of something short lived—the very sentiment Robert Frost expressed in, “nature’s first green is gold.” For Coloradans, Aspen trees are a source of joy and wonder due to the precious few native deciduous tree species here, and their intense autumn display against a backdrop of conifers. I prefer the more subtle shift from spring to summer, and make these images as visual poems to express how aspen leaves tremble at the slightest breeze, their unique formal fragility, and springtime’s ephemeral color.
